Welcome to Marc Himes Wood Turned Art. My peices are all turned on the lathe and many of them are colored, textured or have other embellishments. Most of the wood I use is from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan where I live with my wife Rene'. I am a member of the American Association of Woodturners and our local chapter Superiorland Woodturners. While most of the work is meant to be artistic and decorative, many are functional as well. At times a piece will be highlighted in the Featured Turning section. These are usually the more recent and artistic pieces and may be a little different than most woodturned items. While all the pieces are available for purchase, I would hope you would also enjoy simply seeing the photos and viewing them as pieces of art. I may be contacted using the "Contact" section of the website or through email at jmarchimes@charter.net. Please note that a 6% sales tax and USPS shipping charges will be added to the price when appropriate.

ERUPTION
This wall hanging was made from a slab of Yellow Birch Burl. It was carved and sanded to get the shape and textures. Colors were applied in layers, sanded back and reapplied to get the final appearance. It brings to my mind several scenarios but mostly underwater, volcanic scenes. It was purchased by a friend who had been a coworker for many years. I measures 30" x 19 ".

OCTAGONAL PLATTER

This 13 x13 piece was turned form Curly Maple and textured. I used the airbrush to apply the colors and gave it a Polyurethane finish. It is meant to be decorative but could hold dry goods. I could be displayed flat or with a stand on a shelf or on the wall. It is available in the Store.
WHAT'S LEFT
This piece was turned from a slab of American Chestnut Burl. It was turned on several axes and given texture and color. The irregular edges were on the piece when I purchased it. It makes me think of a relic found in some ruin, or on a battle field. It reminds me of a shield that was damaged, but restored and I called it "What's Left". It is what is left, showing the scars of previous life and experience, yet has a beauty, once give the right care and love. Perhaps it symbolizes what is left, not only of a shield, but also of the soldier who carried it and his society. It is a wall hanging and measures 25" x 19". The piece was purchased by a former fighter pilot.

GENESIS

"GENISIS' is a bowl turned from maple about 14" in diameter and 2.5" high. It was turned and sanded then spray painted black with a gloss black lacquer. Iridescent paints were then dropped on to the surface and blown around with an airbrush to give the wispy, "cosmic cloud" appearance. More paint was added with the lathe spinning to get the centrifugal ray pattern.

"HIDDEN IMAGES"
This may be the most beautiful piece I have ever made. It was made from Italian Olive Wood and has Padauk side pieces. The cracks were filled with metallic copper or crushed stone and the Padauk side pieces were attached with copper rods. The grain pattern is spectacular and with the carved out portions suggested a river to me, but there are many other images such as a couple in an embrace, or animal figures. You can find other images if you use your imagination. It is finished on both sides and can be a wall hanging or a divider.

UNDER THE SEA This is another piece from the large Yellow Birch Burl I harvested about 2 years ago. The burl was on some land that is owned by a fellow woodturner and friend. My son helped with his tractor and we both got a lot of beautiful wood. This piece measures 25" x 19" x 3". It is large! The beautiful figure, and texture bring to mind some strange aquatic creatures deep in the ocean. It was dyed with "Trans Tint" Dyes and finished with many coats of polyurethane.
VIEW FROM THE DEEP
This is a 24" dyed Yellow Birch Burl wall hanging. What I tried to portray in this piece was a feeling of being underwater and looking up at the sun with strands of seaweed and bubbles rising up to the surface. Others have seen a lily pad. Yellow Birch burls are one of my favorite woods due to their striking figure which often as seen below radiates out from the center creating a very interesting pattern. Many people see different things in this type of wood which adds to its attractiveness. The piece attracts you leading you to explore it more in depth as various images come to mind. As always I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Sunrise over Misty Mountain.
This is a 17" wall hanging turned from slab of Maple Burl. The figure seemed to show a mountain on a horizon so I colored it as seen. I see a mountain peak with rocks and rivers as well as a prairie and rolling hills. What do you see.

This is a Suspended Winged Lidded Bowl. The body of the piece is made from Curly Maple while the top is made from Rosewood with a bird's Eye Maple insert. The Lid handle is carved from Rosewood. Wings are represented by the maid body, both with the lateral wings and with the rim of the suspended bowl as it rises above the rest of the piece. The handle is also carved to represent wings. The piece is 14.5" long, 7.5"wide and 4.5" to the top of the lid and after being dyed was finished with a Polyurethane product.

"WAVE" this is a piece that was turned from a slab off an Ash Burl. It is 16" in length and 4" high to the top of the handle. the center portion is a lidded bowl. The piece was turned in three different planes to get all the curves and the wave form. Burl figured wood was cored from the central bowl portion and used in the lid along with Walnut. The piece was then dyed with multiple colors and finished with Wipe on Poly. This piece was poosted on multiple woodturing forums where it was well received and on the American Association of Woodturners Forum won the Turning of the Week award March 9-16, 2014.

"SHIELD"
This is a 22" x 18" wall hanging that was turned from a Maple Burl slab. Metallic copper and crushed turquoise stone were added then the piece was dyed. It was given a poly urethane finish and reminded me of a mid evil shield.
